No junk in this trunk!

Tesla Motors

Holy I’m-not-using-gasoline Batman! The Tesla Roadster is 100% electric, 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds, 1¢ a mile, 250 miles per charge sweetness!

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know jack about electric cars, but this appears to be the first true step in taking electric cars to consumers. Though the $100,000 price tag seems steep right now, I’d be willing to bet in the coming years this price will drop a bit. If I waited a few years to buy a CD player, DVD, etc.—I can wait a little while for this baby.

End of an era for VW vans

The classic air-cooled VW vans, called Kombis in Brasil, have reached the end of the line due to the Brasilian government’s new pollution laws which com into effect this year. I didn’t realize they were still making these vans until my first trip to Rio de Janeiro in 2000. All over Brasil, there’s a bazillion of those white vans puttering all through the streets. Kombis are the true workhorse of small and large businesses, hospitals, even the military. Though the traditional air-cooled ones will stop being produced, the factory will keep the body intact and add a water-cooled engine and radiator. In celebration for the engine change, they’ll produce around 200 Silver Edition kombis with the original air-cooled engines – which no doubt will become collector’s items.

There’s a full story at CBS News, also check out the Volkwagen Brasil site for more images.
