Mark Simonson Talks Type about an edition of Metropolis from 1977.
I have a personal love and admiration for a lot of the careful type lockups from the 1970s. A few years ago I was at a used book sale at a library in Rio de Janeiro and picked up a hardbound 10 year special edition of Revista Manchete, which was stocked full of yummy type similar to what Mark shares. I believe this cover is from 1971.

If you happen to be on vacation in Lisbon later this week, I urge you to stroll down to Galeria Trema to check out the “Todos Dias” exhibition showcasing the work of Carlos Quitério.
I’ve been a big fan of his work for awhile now. He’s got a real dreamy sense of composition and still manages to be “down-to-earth” and real (which is essentially the same thing).
I really wish I could make the trip to Portugal in general, but this would be a serious cherry-on-top for me!
Boa sorte Carlos, parabéns!

Design Times Square: The Urban Forest Project brings 185 banners created by the world’s most celebrated designers, artists, photographers and illustrators to New York’s Times Square. Each banner uses the form of the tree, or a metaphor for the tree, to make a powerful visual statement. Together they create a forest of thought-provoking images at one of the world’s busiest, most energetic, and emphatically urban intersections. Following their display, (September 1–October 31, 2006) the banners will be recycled into tote bags and sold at auction, with proceeds going to scholarship and mentoring programs that benefit students of the visual arts. Some banners embody visceral responses to pressing environmental, political and social issues. Others use the evocative power of nature to develop rich patterns and abstract forms that delight the viewer. All contain passion, thought, and energy—qualities that only emerge when the world’s finest creative minds apply themselves to a brief they truly believe in.
Check their site for the full scoop!

My favorite new imageblog is from long-time favorite, pixel-by-pixel artists…Eboy. Subscribe to their xml feed here or go directly to their site at www.eboy.com. Either way you’re in for a treat—all of their work is so fun to look at, it’s humorous, imaginative and all of it is executed flawlessly!
There’s plenty of really nice posters at the Eboy store as well.

Here’s a great way to get your paws on a free calendar AND stick it to the man. Download each month or the entire 2005 calendar and send it to the color printer. No, for real, it’s a great calendar, a wnice idea for a promotional piece. And by the way, there’s some wonderful fontage as well as graphic design up in the mix.
And while you’re at it, go ahead and subscribe to their font feed. That is, if you love type the way I do!

If you’re sitting in front of your computer somewhere in America, there’s a good chance that the last orange you ate has travelled the world more than you have. So, when are you going to get up and out of America to see the rest of the world? And where the hell was your orange from?
Well, our faithful Futurefarmer Amy Franceschini addresses the latter question (and quite a bit more) with her latest eco-friendly contribution:

^Art: free-soil.org^
FRUIT takes up the challenge of elevating the ecological knowledge of consumers and encouraging a way of life that is friendly to the environment. We want consumers to be conscious of the entire life of a product, from production to utilization, and not just what they see in the stores. Consumers must be aware that every phase of a product’s life influences the environment and ourselves.
Try F.R.U.I.T. & Free Soil (not necessarily in that order).

A site I check out on a daily basis, Ads of the World, has listed several ads from Brasil’s Veja magazine which are quite amazing. I couldn’t find too much more information on the campaign; if anyone has a clue let me know.

Art: Icaro Doria
A team at Lisbon-based monthly magazine Grande Reportagem came up with a chain e-mail campaign that uses the flags of eight different national flags to show relevant issues particular to each country.

Art: Icaro Doria
In a statement to BrazilianArtists.net Brasilian-born Icaro Doria says:
“We started to research relevant, global, and current facts and, thus, came up with the idea to put new meanings to the colours of the flags. We used real data taken from the websites of Amnesty International and the UN.”
Although, some comments from adland users dispute the validity of the data I have to agree with one comment that it really doesn’t matter about the accuracy – the statement has been made in a very emotional way and that’s what counts.
I think the idea and execution of this project is outstanding; remeniscent of the work of Tibor Kalman, Sagmeister, and the like. Here’s a link to view all eight pieces.

Either Sonia or Yuri are responsible for this gallery of Russian Anti-Alcohol posters. Don’t go too far away though, because she has quite a comprehensive portfolio (as does he).
