There’s a short-n-sweet photo gallery of Abstract New York over at the NY Times that I thought was interesting.

My train, the 1 train, was voted the 3rd cleanest train in New York. All I can say is there must be some serious filth on the East Side.

Photo: Dulce Pinzón
What is a hero? Dulce Pinzón asks this question and focuses on a very common, unsung hero—immigrants. More specifically, he targets the Mexican immigrant in New York. He’s introduced an interesting juxtaposition of American and Mexican superhero characters and the many different jobs that Mexicans living in New York City perform. As far as their “hero” credibility, Mr Pinzón states how much money they send back home to Mexico. I would argue that these people’s potential “hero factor” increases as they contribute in many other ways aside from sending money to their home country.
On one hand, it’s a politically-charged statement that forces one to think about the current situation of illegal immigration, stereotypes, etc. On the other hand, they’re great photographs by combining a surreal element in a concrete environment, which in my opinion could stand on it’s own.
I think this project is brilliant, really fantastic! Check out more photographs here.

Wow! Another brilliant piece by Yugop is a shopping interface for SoHo’s newest retail shop, Uniqlo. Aside from the interesting interface, the site boaasts some really fantastic photography and an overall clean aesthetic.

Design Times Square: The Urban Forest Project brings 185 banners created by the world’s most celebrated designers, artists, photographers and illustrators to New York’s Times Square. Each banner uses the form of the tree, or a metaphor for the tree, to make a powerful visual statement. Together they create a forest of thought-provoking images at one of the world’s busiest, most energetic, and emphatically urban intersections. Following their display, (September 1–October 31, 2006) the banners will be recycled into tote bags and sold at auction, with proceeds going to scholarship and mentoring programs that benefit students of the visual arts. Some banners embody visceral responses to pressing environmental, political and social issues. Others use the evocative power of nature to develop rich patterns and abstract forms that delight the viewer. All contain passion, thought, and energy—qualities that only emerge when the world’s finest creative minds apply themselves to a brief they truly believe in.

An anonymous Gawker shit-talker bitchslaps NYC in this article while abusing the newest old explicative on the street—”douchebag.”
I have to say that I cracked up reading this article, because it’s for the most part true. New York City could very well be the worst “greatest city in the world” in the world.

Lower Manhattan’s Solaire building is the city’s first green residential high-rise. The building has its own wastewater and stormwater systems, uses special lights & appliances, as well as a wealth of other features. The building uses 30% less energy than a building comparable in size.
There’s a ton of information at their web site as well as the Battery Park City site.
This is hopefully the beginning of a lot more to come from architects and real estate developers. Anyone who lives in Manhattan probably knows how much energy is wasted—especially in a lot of the old buildings.

I keep meaning to go to the Freelancers Union site from seeing all the posters on the train, but keep forgetting. Anyhow, they just came out with a report (.pdf download) on freelancers in New York.
Freelancing isn’t just a way of making a living, it’s a way of life. That’s what the Freelancers Union found when it surveyed more than 2,800 New York City freelancers in the spring of 2005. Creative, independent and entrepreneurial, many freelancers are fiercely dedicated to their lifestyle.

Exhale my brothers an’ sistass, New York Metro has finally come out with this year’s undisputable list of choice ass NYC’s most beautiful people (of which 90% are either bartenders or waitresses). If there’s one thing I absolutely love about this list and this city is the diversity in beauty we have: a 30-something trapeze artist/filmaker, a middle-aged mother, a 90 year-old actress, and of course the ad exec, artist, designer, and such (bla bla bla).
One of these NYC beauties is hip hop’s royalty of raunch, Princess Superstar. She’s smokin, hot shit all up in yo’ grill! Born and raised in NY, she’s worked this city a few times over putting out her own records and promoting herself – you gotta respect that.
Oh, and how many white women do you know in hip hop? How many have tight ass rhymes with a filthy mouth like your drunk ass Uncle John who was in the Navy back in the day? She’s an original, period.
So, check out her site, buy her records, see her live, put her slutty poster in your gym locker, and if you see her on the street make sure you bow down to her highness.
Excerpt from I’m So…
I hate where I be livin on Clinton Street
The other day I saw a dead guy lyin under a sheet
And these 14 year old pushers tryin to sell me dope
And the fuckin salsa music I can’t even copeI used to really love livin on the Lower East Side
But when I walk down the street, “Yo Pussy need a ride?”
Is what I hear from every mac muthafucker givin hassles
Yo Punk I ain’t a stripper, you see some tassles?Crawlin all over the apartment are cockroaches and moths
And my ex-boyfriend says I act like David Lee Roth
All these record labels calling but they don’t produce the cash
Yo boy shave that goatee and uh then call me back
I’m working 2 different jobs and I’m always fuckin broke
Eatin tofu everyday and uh maybe a coke
Feelin down feelin bad feelin slow like a turtle
C’mon get me off the mike because I’m frontin like Urkel!

In a gothamist report, a lady skateboarder fell on a hot sewer cap and was branded. This could very well be the next wave of X-treme body mods to hits the streets.
She doesn’t realize how cool she is right now – being the first woman skateboarder to get a sewer cap brand stamped on her ass, so she’s suing Con Ed for “scarring her for life.” (Nice choice of words by the way)!

Friday, July 8th marks the beginning of the 3rd Brazilian Film Festival of NY. The festival opens at Central Park Summer Stage with Gabriel O Pensador playing a free show at Rumsey Field (69th-72nd Sts) at 7:00p. Then, at 8:30p, director Sergio Goldenberg’s Maria’s Place (Bendito O Fruto) will be screened (also for free). It sounds like a real good time, check it out!

Gabriel O Pensador
“One of the greatest names in Brazilian rap, Gabriel O Pensador, that is, Gabriel the Thinker, has always been different from most of his peers due to being a white, middle-class kid. Since the beginning of his career, Gabriel distinguished himself for the social criticism in his lyrics. Son of journalist Belisa Ribeiro, Gabriel appeared in 1992 with the song “To feliz, matei o presidente”. At that time he was still studying Journalism at the University in Rio de Janeiro.”

Maria’s Place (Bendito O Fruto)
35mm / color / 90 min / 2005 / Romantic Comedy
“An accident involving a flying manhole cover leads to a chance meeting between two childhood friends: a widow and the owner of a beauty parlor. Thus begins an entertaining game of seduction that brings memories and hidden desires to the surface – furtive passions that end up threatening the hairdresser’s de facto marriage.”

Whoa Nelly! This tried, dyed, and laid to the side blast from the ass past is complaining because she doesn’t want to pay more than $500 a month for her Upper West Side apartment. Jez, talk about a penny-pincher!

Apparently, there’s money lying all over the ground in subway stations all over New York City. Say what?! The MTA made $21 million last year from people not using their MetroCards because of the expiration date on the back of the card. A lot of people don’t know that the MTA has a (very discreet) policy of transferring balances from old cards to new ones.
Hey straphangers! Read more about it here.

It’s about time! Three cheers for solar-powered ANYTHING! Check out their site here for the full scoop.
Restaurateur/entrepreneur Sean Meenan’s vision expands far beyond plans for a new site at which to sell his Café Habana (Meenan’s restaurant on Elizabeth & Prince St.) classics. Habana Outpost: Brooklyn creates a venue for local artists which supports local economies and builds community. The Outpost is a seasonal affair that will take place for 6 months out of the year, and will feature an inventive roster of entertainment and special events (a little something for everyone) that are sure to make it a popular destination. Building New York’s first solar powered restaurant/artist community is just the beginning for Sean. Just wait to see what he’s up to next…

The closing of a finished year and arrival of a new one yields plenty of “Best of” lists – from films, music, people, etc. (The most depressing would have to be Time‘s Person of the year). However, I was really happy to hear on NY1 today that Wynton Marsalis has been awarded the New Yorker of the Year for 2004. Wow, that’s hot! I think Mr. Marsalis is well deserving of this honor. As a true Renaissance man, he’s got his hand in every pot in the kitchen and still manages to cook it all up with raw talent and impeccable style.
He’s won eight Grammy awards for his jazz and classical recordings, he was the first jazz artist ever to receive the Pulitzer Prize for music, and countless other awards and honors from all over the world.
As a composer, performer, teacher, and leader, he’s always managed to display his true love of America’s most endearing form of art – jazz music. You can tell he loves his craft, that he honors all the greats of the past as well as helping to pave a path for young, emerging jazz artists. For his talent and commitment, I have to agree that he makes one hell of a New Yorker of the Year!

This February, Christo and Jeanne-Claude will change the face of New York City’s Central Park by erecting 7500 16-foot Gates along the walkways in the park.
These artists do not accept sponsorships or donations and will fund this project themselves. Also, they will employ thousands of New York residents in the construction of this huge installation.
Their site is full on interesting information about their work. I will, however, leave you with an interesting quote from an article I read on Yahoo News.
“Freedom is the enemy of possession and possession is equal to permanence. That is why our projects cannot remain and must go away forever. Our projects are ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ and ‘once upon a time.” –Christo and Jeanne-Claude
I can’t wait to see this with my own eyes!
