If you’ve ever scouted out stock photography, there’s a 99% chance you have a Getty account in which to find the perfect photo to please your boss. I have always had a love/hate relationship with image houses in general. Don’t get me wrong, there is definitely a place for stock photography as well as sites that sell the work. However, I was shocked to read that Getty makes more money off an image than the actual photographer does. And now, apparently, Getty is licensing exclusive rights to certain Flickr photographs. What the hell?! Flickr is a great resource for creative types as-is, why wouldn’t you just contact a photographer directly and negotiate usage?
I realize that “crowdsourcing” is now an official water-cooler buzzword, but who plans on defending photographers (and illustrators) while image houses continue to run the show?

Dark Roasted Blend is full of interesting, bizarre, and entertainingly candid shots, including car and plane accidents.

There’s a short-n-sweet photo gallery of Abstract New York over at the NY Times that I thought was interesting.

According to NASA, a really small star had an intense solar flare around the end of April 2008. NASA’s Swift satellite captured the flare, which was thousands of times more powerful than any other solar flare observed.
Aside from all the interesting science, the image is amazingly beautiful.

Photo: Dulce Pinzón
What is a hero? Dulce Pinzón asks this question and focuses on a very common, unsung hero—immigrants. More specifically, he targets the Mexican immigrant in New York. He’s introduced an interesting juxtaposition of American and Mexican superhero characters and the many different jobs that Mexicans living in New York City perform. As far as their “hero” credibility, Mr Pinzón states how much money they send back home to Mexico. I would argue that these people’s potential “hero factor” increases as they contribute in many other ways aside from sending money to their home country.
On one hand, it’s a politically-charged statement that forces one to think about the current situation of illegal immigration, stereotypes, etc. On the other hand, they’re great photographs by combining a surreal element in a concrete environment, which in my opinion could stand on it’s own.
I think this project is brilliant, really fantastic! Check out more photographs here.

Art: Chris Jordan, Cans Seurat, 2007
Chris Jordan’s new exhibit Running the Numbers is a thought-provoking piece that brings ordinary statistics to life throught his brilliant use of scale and repetition.
If you’re in New York this summer, you’ll be able to see these images in their native size at the Von Lintel Gallery from June 14 through the end of July.

Photo editor Dorothy Ho writes a beautiful note about her current project which puts cameras in the hands of migrant workers in Singapore in order to see what usually isn’t seen.
She writes…
“Jaded by repetitive news reports, our perspective of the world tends to be narrow and fearful. We live by stereotypes and cliches because it is easier to understand the world through a simple lens…”

After all of the marvelous things the internet does for us nowadays, I still enjoy the fact that it has yet to cease as a viable outlet for our innermost (neurotic?) desires to catalogue absolutely EVERYTHING under the sun…
…like tons of blank cassettes! Check out Not Wild Style’s Cassette Jam ‘05 before the 50 gazillion terabyte Lee Press-On hard drives give us a DVD nostalgia gallery.
