Dulce Pinzón - Superheroes

Dulce Pinzón's Superheroes
Photo: Dulce Pinzón

What is a hero? Dulce Pinzón asks this question and focuses on a very common, unsung hero—immigrants. More specifically, he targets the Mexican immigrant in New York. He’s introduced an interesting juxtaposition of American and Mexican superhero characters and the many different jobs that Mexicans living in New York City perform. As far as their “hero” credibility, Mr Pinzón states how much money they send back home to Mexico. I would argue that these people’s potential “hero factor” increases as they contribute in many other ways aside from sending money to their home country.

On one hand, it’s a politically-charged statement that forces one to think about the current situation of illegal immigration, stereotypes, etc. On the other hand, they’re great photographs by combining a surreal element in a concrete environment, which in my opinion could stand on it’s own.

I think this project is brilliant, really fantastic! Check out more photographs here.

Chris Jordan - Running the Numbers

Chris Jordan - Cans Seurat
Art: Chris Jordan, Cans Seurat, 2007

Chris Jordan’s new exhibit Running the Numbers is a thought-provoking piece that brings ordinary statistics to life throught his brilliant use of scale and repetition.

If you’re in New York this summer, you’ll be able to see these images in their native size at the Von Lintel Gallery from June 14 through the end of July.

“Don’t shoot!” I cried. “Don’t copy!” exclaimed Mr. Rand. Unfortunately, they kept shooting and copying because evolution is a very slow process, you will most likely never see the benefits of it.

Abraham Lincoln vs. John F. Kennedy

Lincoln and Kennedy on President's Day
Art: Brian Morris

In honor Presiden’t Day today, I pledge that I will sleep late, watch plenty of daytime TV… offer all of you conspiracy theorists some remarkable presidential factoids to impress your history teacher with. I found this text document years ago and for some reason kept it. I regret that I cannot credit whoever wrote this thing, so I apologize in advance. At any rate, check out these similarities between these two former United States presidents:

The history of the peace symbol

It was designed in 1958 by Gerald Holtom, a professional designer and artist and a graduate of the Royal College of Arts. He showed his preliminary sketches to a small group of people in the Peace News office in North London and to the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War, one of several smaller organisations that came together to set up CND.

Secret service tracking your printouts (at home)?

print icon

Everyone kinda suspected this, but now it’s out in the open. Government agencies have partnered with printer companies in order to track what you’re printing out of the printer you paid for. Check out the The Washington Post article, then look at C|NET’s photos (nice one)!

New Orleans "refugees" hold out in their homes

Foto: Chang W. Lee/The New York Times

In a NY Times article, New Orleans’ residents speak out about how they don’t wish to leave their homes.

Ms. Harris said she did not want to leave. “I haven’t even run out of weed yet,” she said.

But she knows that fighting with police officers is futile.

“I’ll probably bitch and moan, but I’m not going to hole up,” she said.

And by Thursday afternoon, Kajun’s Pub had closed, and the vehicles previously parked outside were gone.

There was no indication whether Mr. Dobbs and the other people who had been drinking and joking six hours earlier had been evacuated or simply disappeared into the city.

Hurricane Katrina sent from God?

Every once in awhile I come across some bullshit that’s really, really hard to swallow. This is one of those times. Apparently, these jackasses think a hurricane was sent to wipe out all the sinful people of New Orleans. Now, I don’t really get too worked up about this kind of stuff because it’s just too ridiculous to even consider. As a matter of fact, it’s just downright funny (and sad) to think people publish this kind of garbage. Maybe I’m missing something, is this supposed to be on The Onion?

“We must help and pray for those ravaged by this disaster, but let us not forget that the citizens of New Orleans tolerated and welcomed the wickedness in their city for so long,” Marcavage said. “May this act of God cause us all to think about what we tolerate in our city limits, and bring us trembling before the throne of Almighty God,” Marcavage concluded.

”[God] sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.”

Pitbulls banned in Rio de Janeiro

According to the Brasilian newspaper O Globo, you won’t be seeing too many more pitbulls around public spaces in Rio de Janeiro (Reuters has a small article as well). Although many people depend on (attack) dogs like pitbulls as a form of protection against robbery and other crimes, it’s common knowledge that the general nature of this particular breed is vicious.

Rosinha Matheus, the governor of Rio, has implemented a ban on breeding, importing, and selling of these dogs as well as a mandatory resistration and sterilization of the remaining pitbulls over the next four months.

As a side note, pitbull is also a stereotypical “tough guy” in Rio. They usually are bulging at the seams with muscles, have no necks, and are hopelessly attracted to half-naked blondes with no brains (these blondes usually preferring “doggiestyle” as a favorite position although in Brasil it’s referred to as “Fried Chicken” style). Statistically speaking, 98% are into judo or ultimate fighting, and consequentially have pitbulls as pets. Lemme stop, this is getting ridiculous.

Where my dogs at?

Brasilian Mayor wins Golden Chainsaw award

^foto: Greenpeace ^

Although it was a difficult decision, Blairo Maggi won this year’s prestigous award for his efforts in the deforestation of Brasil. Mr. Maggi, who is the governor of the state of Mato Grosso, is known as the “King of Soy,” as he has cut down forests in order to grow soybeans. Unfortunately, Brasil has a long history of a select few individuals selling raw materials abroad. Mr. Maggi has kept the flame alive by living in the present, disregarding the future of his country by wiping out forests at record levels—all in the name of stacking banknotes. He’s right up there with the plantation (and slave) owners who made tons of money exporting coffee, cotton, and all kinds of raw, natural resources to foreign countries while paying people close to nothing for their hard labor.

All of my friends and colleagues know I’m not a big advocate for Greenpeace, as I really couldn’t give a shit about “the environment,” but this clown really takes the cake. I’d invite everyone to read up on how this guy is setting a new standard for being a real jerk.

Meet the world

Art: Icaro Doria

A team at Lisbon-based monthly magazine Grande Reportagem came up with a chain e-mail campaign that uses the flags of eight different national flags to show relevant issues particular to each country.

Art: Icaro Doria

In a statement to BrazilianArtists.net Brasilian-born Icaro Doria says:

“We started to research relevant, global, and current facts and, thus, came up with the idea to put new meanings to the colours of the flags. We used real data taken from the websites of Amnesty International and the UN.”

Although, some comments from adland users dispute the validity of the data I have to agree with one comment that it really doesn’t matter about the accuracy – the statement has been made in a very emotional way and that’s what counts.

I think the idea and execution of this project is outstanding; remeniscent of the work of Tibor Kalman, Sagmeister, and the like. Here’s a link to view all eight pieces.

State of Affairs

Today I am very sad at the results of the American Presidential election. The majority of my friends and family vehemently detest Mr Bush (as do I). It’s somewhat inexplicable that Americans would welcome him back to office. A good friend of mine from the Netherlands phoned me today and we talked for a long time about this election. We were unable to explain how America could possible vote for such a bad, bad president. As an American citizen who has been living in South America for the last 2 years, I’ve felt the anguish expressed by people outside of America concerning Mr Bush’s policies. In short, he has made it difficult for Americans in America to live as well as Americans traveling or living abroad.

I am also saddened at the brutal murder of Theo van Gogh in Amsterdam by a young Muslim extremist. As my Dutch friend put it, “The murder of a creative person in Holland is a big thing.” In my short time spent in Holland, the most noteworthy discovery I made was the common characteristic of tolerance among Dutch people. It seems that Islamic fundamentalists have been testing this quality among the people of this country. I can’t help but to see the similarities in my own country as well as Holland and other places across the globe.

Overall, I’m quite disenchanted with the state of affairs around the world. I’m wondering if Nostradamus had some sort of prediction about the end of the world in the near future.
